Vietnamese Football and the Data Puzzle: When Analysis Has No Foundation

If you have ever read a 9-page football analysis report that contains not a single actual number, you will understand my feeling when receiving the input for this article. An in-depth Stage-2 analysis of football, but all data fields are empty: no title, no source, no entities, no information. It is like a pitch without players, a match without goals. So what happens when the Vietnamese sports analysis community faces such a data void? Vietnamese football is developing rapidly, with professional leagues V.League 1 and V.League 2 attracting great attention. However, data infrastructure remains fragmented. Metrics such as xG (expected goals), PPDA (passes allowed per defensive action), or possession rate are often only available for big clubs or international matches. For most domestic games, detailed data either does not exist or is not published. This creates a paradox: more fans and experts want deep analysis, but the raw materials are lacking. The blank report I received is a typical example. It was designed to analyze nine dimensions: tactics, finance, results, league, rules, management, risk, media, and industry impact. But no field could be filled because the input was empty. From the perspective of a Vietnamese football observer, this reflects the reality that domestic analysts often work with incomplete data. They have to rely on direct observation, interviews, or unofficial sources to compensate. On the other hand, this is also an opportunity. When numerical data is absent, analysts are forced to look at qualitative factors: team spirit, coach tactics, adaptation of young players. These are what create authentic sports stories. For example, in V.League, a team's defensive counter-attacking style can be understood through their movement on the pitch, not just through xG. The lack of data is not an absolute barrier; it is a reminder that football remains a human sport, not just numbers. However, to raise professionalism, Vietnamese football needs to invest in data collection systems. Clubs can partner with technology companies to record every pass, shot, and player position. The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) should also standardize the publication of match statistics. Otherwise, reports like the one I received – beautiful in form but empty in content – will continue to appear, diminishing the value of sports analysis. The lesson from this failed analysis is: data is the foundation of any analysis. Without it, no matter how rigorous the theoretical framework, the result is just an empty shell. For Vietnamese football, it is time to build a solid data foundation so that stories on the pitch can be told accurately and deeply. Journalists, analysts, and fans all deserve that.
