15-year-old chess prodigy Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus sets record crossing 2700 Elo

Turkish chess player Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, aged 15, has become the youngest player in history to surpass the 2700 Elo rating, currently holding a rating of 2716 and ranked 26th in the world. This achievement was announced today by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). Erdogmus has repeatedly broken age-related records, crossing 2600 Elo at 13 years, 2 months, and 15 days, and has been the youngest to enter the world's top 100, top 50, and top 20 at respective ages. He also became the youngest to exceed 2700, breaking the previous record held by Chinese player Wei Yi. Grandmaster Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who once peaked at 2820 Elo, stated that Erdogmus could potentially reach the 2900 milestone in the future. In an interview, Mamedyarov said: "He has rare talent and great determination. If he continues developing in the right direction, reaching 2900 is completely feasible." Erdogmus expressed his ambition to boost the popularity of chess in Turkey, similar to the chess wave in India. He said: "I want Turkish children to love chess, and I hope that one day Turkey becomes a chess powerhouse like India." The emergence of Erdogmus along with 17-year-old Ediz Gürel marks a new generation of Turkish talents, promising competition on the international stage in the coming years. Experts highly appreciate Erdogmus's ability but also note that rapid progression may carry risks of mental burnout or peaking early. However, with support from the national federation and international tournaments, Erdogmus has a great opportunity to establish his position in the professional arena.
