Pham Quynh Huong and the 46 Points That Have No Denominator

Quynh Huong's points break down this way: 38 attack points, or 82.6 per cent; 4 blocks, or 8.7 per cent; 4 service points, or 8.7 per cent. That is the profile of a wing hitter carrying reception duties, not a pure opposite. Within Vietnam's system she is a third threat built to reduce dependence on Thanh Thuy and Bich Thuy, a standard spread-the-block logic rather than a tactical invention.

The problem is that the summary supplies no attack attempts. The total of 46 is a one-sided statistic. If I take 100 swings for 38 points, I am an efficient hitter. If I take 140 swings for 38 points, I am a volume hitter. The same 38, two very different stories. Without a denominator, 46 is volume, not efficiency. At the top level, efficiency decides how long rallies survive.

Vietnam's plan against China is already clearly shaped: hold the first pass, prolong rallies, drag the opponent into long sets. The irony is that the very summary reporting on Quynh Huong contains the evidence against its own optimism. China scored 62 points in both group matches without dropping a set. The question "is China scary?" traps itself in the wrong frame. China is scary, of course.
